The bad news is that most of my potatoes didn’t send up sprouts. I guess maybe I planted the seed potatoes too early, and the winter was just too cold. I don’t know. But my whole huge potato bed is less than half full of potato vines now. The picture at right should be saturated with green potato vines, but only a few popped up. I finally had to cover it all over with straw because all that was coming up was weeds.
But that leads me to the good news: I have some space! I could either plant something I decided to forgo this year (squash, eggplants, bell peppers), or indulge my tomato addiction and get some interesting new variety. I can’t plant anything from seed, like carrots or beets, since the bare patches are on the far side of the row and would be hard to tend to. I need to plant something I can buy as a seedling. What do you think, loyal readers?
