Ugh, I came down with a cold, which unfortunately meant I had to miss the March food blogger happy hour. The only cocktail I’ve been swilling today is NyQuil. But I think I got a real boost from some great takeout pho at Asian Bistro, on L Street near 19th:
I ordered the Deluxe Pho, which came with pork, beef, shrimp, fake crab, and other assorted add-ins. The spicy broth was awesome for my sinuses, and just salty enough (but not too salty!). And usually I find pho beef kind of gristly, but this was perfect. Loved the sweet pork, too.
I also got some fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce, but I was not at all impressed with them. The peanut sauce was basically peanut butter that had been thinned only slightly – there wasn’t any spiciness or hoisin-y goodness there. And the dry-ish rolls were not really good enough to eat without sauce. They also lacked mint.
I’d heard mixed reviews of Asian Bistro, and I guess mine is as well. Until we get more Vietnamese joints downtown, I think this is a good place when you just really need some pho.
