The remnants of Hurricane Ida came through DC yesterday, making it a very wet Veteran’s Day holiday. I mostly stayed inside and cooked. Comfort foods are just that much more comforting when it’s awful outside. First I cooked up a big pot of chili, with black beans and kidney beans and ground Virginia buffalo meat from Cibola Farms. Plus some bacon – you really can’t go wrong if you start off a stew or chili with rendered pork fat.
I also made a pumpkin pie. I loooooove pumpkin pie, and I’ll make it at any time of year, but it’s really perfect for cold weather. And since the weather report says it’s going to keep raining for three days straight, having all this comfort food around is a serious necessity.
