I work two blocks from where the new Freshfarm Market near the White House descends every Thursday. Sadly, I was too busy at work to get over to the market’s premiere two weeks ago, when Michelle Obama was there to kick things off. According to Obama Foodorama, she had these words to say:
“For those of us who have a time crunch, and for those us for whom access to fresh foods is an issue in our neighborhoods, farmers markets are really an important resource. This market in particular will provide access to fresh fruits and vegetable, local grains, meats and cheeses, for busy working people, for federal employees. As many private companies have demonstrated, wellness programs are very important for health care reform…you can now run out and pick up some good stuff for dinner on your way home.”
I finally got to check out the White House market yesterday, and the First Lady was certainly correct about the clientele. The vendors may have been mostly the same as at the Dupont Circle market, but the patrons were a far more pantsuited crowd. This’ll be a good way to stock up when my weekend loot runs out.
And speaking of Michelle Obama, check out her adorable guest spot on Sesame Street teaching kids about gardening!
