Sunday Photos: Ugly and Beautiful
August 23, 2009 by Amelia
I usually only show the prettiest photos from my garden: luscious tomatoes, colorful blossoms, and gleaming scrubbed root vegetables. But right now, there’s no getting around the fact that my garden is a huge mess. My new strategy is to harvest everything as quickly as I can eat and/or preserve it. Then I’m going to rip everything out and put in a few things for fall.
But for now, it’s still a mess. Yet, there are still little flashes of beauty every now and again.
Weeds are everywhere, and the tomatoes are starting to get brown (not with late blight, but probably some other disease).
Everything is overgrown. The morning glory is choking a lot of things. I can't wait to just pull everything out.
Even amid the mess, there's beauty.
Bronze fennel is basically a weed, but this one grew thick enough that I might try using it like the more vegetal Florence fennel.
The weeds have grown out of control, but so have the marigolds.
The cayenne peppers got stunted by the spring rains, then choked by the weeds. But they produced enough peppers that I can save seeds and try again next year.
