I bought some canning supplies at the hardware store and some small cucumbers at the market so that I could try my hand at pickling. At some point in the season I plan to pickle some of my own produce, like beets and peppers. But I wanted to start off with something easy, and cucumbers seemed like an obvious choice.
Well, easy is right. Pickling is a snap. I basically followed the instructions here, but I made my own pickling mix using dill from my garden instead of getting a mix from the store. Also, I don’t think the grocery stores here are exactly stocked with pickling supplies. I made sure there was a good vacuum seal, but I’m keeping the jar in the fridge just in case. I’ll wait a week or two before opening it up again and trying the pickles. But it was all so easy, now I’m wondering what else I can pickle in the meantime!
