I made an extremely brief stop by the garden last night to gather some greens. The cut-and-come-again method is really working on the lettuces. I cut them down last weekend, leaving only an inch and a half at the base, and three days later the centers are already growing new leaves.
This week also marks the start of harvests that are not just salad greens and radishes. I harvested some chinese broccoli (pictured), and also ate my first sugar snap pea off the vine. I’ll be able to pick a solid handful of peas this weekend. I’ll also harvest baby bok choy and maybe some collards. And, perhaps the most exciting news, I think I will get to pick a strawberry or two this weekend! The berries were getting a blush last weekend, and yesterday a few of them looked almost ripe until I turned them over and saw the green undersides. But a few more days of sun should do the trick. The blogger at Calendula & Concrete, who is also located here in the DC area, says her strawberries are ripening, too. I can’t wait.
